Beta 1.5 The hyper polish update (+Q&A)
Hiii! Long time no see. This update was supposed to arrive on winter of 2024, and here we are a year late, but at least it's out. So there's a lot that happened to the project in my last year of inactivity, please read past the changelog for some Q&A regarding the development and future of the project.
Keep in mind half of this was written a year ago so don't question me about really specific changes cuz I probably don't know either :>.
Anyways, here are the changes:
-Additions & mechanics:
*Added map marks
*Revamped inventory's visuals & included snail preview
*Full map
*Made the game run in 16:9 instead of 4:3 (that took a lot of time!)
*New title screen & intro
-Small improvements:
*Changed the locations of some NPCs
*Improved music load time (I think, it still needs testing)
*Improved waves push
*Now you can hit bells with broom (so many people requested this wtf)
*Removed weed's weird glow effect in dark areas, to improve performance (not the particles)

*Improved intro's visuals
*Increased desert pillar platforms contrast
*Enhanced some upgrade menu's visuals

*Squash
*Changed a bit how the aiming works
*New broom sprite and animations
*Improved burnable log visuals
*Added keyboard controls for Snailpedia
*Rewrote many Snailpedia entries (sorry for being so bad at writing ;w;)
*Fixed Seablob's shield not working properly and added the possibility for it to be stacked (up to 4 times)
*New logo
*New title theme (the old one was too dramatic lmao)
*New Salesman's glasses screen effect
*New transition tiles between snow and plain Carelia's Edge
-Game balances:
*Buffed wind arrow and increased its mana cost to 5
*Super Blobzooka now drops 80 coins instead of 100
*Eliminated charge attack from Blob and Blobsicles
*Reduced the stats of the following enemies:
-Seablob
-Chirpy
-Pulpin
-Bugs fixed:
*Soft lock in secret room
*Fixed crouch not resetting when using the fish ability
*Fixed map indicator not appearing
*A muted note no longer appears when playing an empty song
*Fixed constellation lines appearing when they shouldn't
*Fixed whistle sound not stopping when transitioning layouts
*Fixed wind arrows not eliminating bubble shield
*Fixed getting multiple ??? badges—I mean, it's not a bug... but why would you want more than one ._.?
*Fixed Super Snorkel Snailpedia entry not working (nevermind, I had to fix it 4 more times)
*Fixed camera getting out of frame when going into a new room
*Fixed flagpole not rendering properly
*Fixed string-based sounds not working because of the new folder structure
???
*Changed some parts of ???-related content
*Reverted secret music to not having tempo requirements
Funny
*Blobsicles now take damage from torches
Q&A
So, what happened to the project, why was it left on a hiatus?
Minervo, the co-creator of the game left the project for personal reasons. After that happened, I lost my will to keep working on the game. Continuing the development felt really weird, so I just let it rest until I recovered my mental. My decision to lenghten the hiatus came from Construct 3 subsequent updates that just kept on corrupting the game and deprecating the systems I had in place.
Why drop this update now?
For the last year, I've been learning unity with the plan in mind of porting webliad to the new engine Epsilon is developping. Since that means I'll stop paying for Construct 3, I didn't want the unfinished update to just stay within my hardrive when my license expires. So I waited until I had some days off and finally completed what was supposed to be a minor polish update before 2.0.
What will happen to the project?
I am not sure. For now, you can consider the game to be on a huge hiatus (like it technically already was lmao), since the development of the Snailiad remake was shifted into godot and that pretty much stopped my current plans. This current version of the game (the one made in construct) will not recieve further updates.
Misc statements
In case you were wondering, this page will not be privated or deleted even if the project is on pause/cancelled. The hypothetical reboot of the game will be published here as just an update, if these plans do change I will make sure to write another devlog detailing the information.
At the moment you can't complete the D.O.O.R questline that opens the mysterious door deep underwater, sorry for all the build up mystery surrounding it that led to an unsatisfactory resolution. Same goes for the crystalized entity in the desert caves, that was supposed to be content for the 2.0 beta that never got finished.
Nonetheless, it was really fun to see the community solve these mysteries, thank you for your dedication!
I also wanted to apologise to my friend, who I inhibited of his creative freedom and put him in a lot of unnecesary stress that could have been avoided with better communication from my end. Your work on this game was amazing and I'll be forever grateful for being such a huge part of this weird project, thank you Minervo.
I'll update this part in case I left anything aoidajfoisdjfps
Lastly, I wanted to say that I really love this game, making it was the most thrilling experience I've ever had. Thanks to all the people involved in the snailiad community for making this as fun as it was and I'm really hoping to see you again in a future reboot or spiritual succesor, whenever that happens 🧡
